Marisa and Jayla have been matched for 8 1/2 years. They were nominated by Jayla’s mom, Shaunda:
“Marisa has been an incredible influence in Jayla’s life, guiding her to embrace new experiences, become more social, and excel in school. She is truly like a big sister to Jayla, always offering support and encouragement, even when she’s away traveling. Marisa’s family has also embraced Jayla, making her feel like part of their own, which has been instrumental in Jayla’s growth and sense of belonging.

One of the most meaningful activities Marisa and Jayla have shared is starting a journal together. They use it to write about their feelings, experiences, and lessons learned. This activity has been a powerful tool for self-expression and reflection, helping Jayla build emotional awareness and confidence.
Marisa has also supported Jayla’s big dreams. Knowing that Jayla wants to attend a HBCU (Historically Black College and University) for college, Marisa arranged for them to see a drumline performance at the Overture Center, knowing it would resonate with her. Jayla came home glowing with excitement, sharing pictures and talking about her future college aspirations. That experience not only brought joy but also strengthened Jayla’s determination to explore colleges and learn more about her options.
Thanks to Marisa’s guidance, Jayla has grown tremendously. She has become more social, adventurous, and open to trying new things, whether it’s food, places, or activities. Her leadership skills have flourished, and she’s taken on roles in school programs, started working, and is even learning how to drive. Jayla is now actively researching colleges, a testament to her ambition and the confidence Marisa has instilled in her.”
